On June 2, nearly 130 friends and supporters of Avalon Recovery Society gathered at the Semiahmoo Fish and Game Club in Surrey to celebrate women in recovery and raise vital funds for Avalon Women’s Centre White Rock.
Attendees of the sixth annual Fashion Show and Tea fundraiser were treated to a well-stocked silent auction featuring exciting getaways, beautiful clothing and jewelry, artwork and much more. Guests also delighted in delicious platters of petit fours generously provided by Belle’s Café, Joyful Indulgence Bakeshop, Laura’s Coffee Corner, Sheila’s Catering Co. and The Secret Garden Tea Company.
In a wonderful show beautifully coordinated by Rhonda McJannet, models took to the catwalk to show off fabulous fashions by local businesses and designers Anna Kristina Boutique, Art to Wear by Marianne Greaves, Fashion on the Edge and Malary’s Fashion Network.
Following the fashion show, guest speaker Dr. Jennifer Hammersmark of The Counselling Group took the sold-out crowd through an interactive and moving presentation on the devastation of addiction, the hope that recovery can bring and the importance of a resource like Avalon.
“Resilience depends more on what we receive than what we have within us,” said Dr. Hammersmark. “That’s important information for an organization like Avalon, because that’s what they are – they are an amazing resource outside of ourselves that we can go to for support.”
Another highlight of the afternoon was vocalist Angela Maffin, who performed a stirring and powerful rendition of Johnny Nash’s “I can see clearly now.”
In her closing remarks, Board President Eileen Kenkel thanked the many volunteers, sponsors and donors that made the day possible, and the generous supporters who help Avalon continue to provide vital, life-changing services.
“We can’t do it without all of you and without all of your support, and events like this that bring us together to celebrate Avalon,” said Kenkel. “Thank you for every gift that helps us to open the doors every day and helps us to provide the support that we know is so important in our community.”
