When Nazanin Fasihi walked into Avalon Women’s Centre North Shore for the first time, she could immediately feel the warmth and sense of belonging.

“When I walked in, I loved it here,” she says.

An Adler University student and active member of the North Shore community, Nazanin was searching for a volunteer opportunity to fulfill the university’s Social Justice Practicum requirement. She reached out to Centre Manager Heide Mayne in November 2018 and has been a staple figure in the North Shore Centre ever since, organizing monthly events such as the Christmas Potluck, a Baking Buffet and the recent North Shore Open House.

In addition to completing volunteer hours with Avalon Recovery Society, Nazanin has decided to do her counselling practicum in the North Shore, where she will be offering one-to-one counselling services starting in September.

“I originally came just for my Social Justice Practicum, but I felt so connected to this place, I didn’t want to leave. There’s so much to do and such a sense of security and love here.”

Nazanin has also been welcomed into support meetings as a counselling student, where she has been able to witness the transformation in the women who attend.

“I’ve heard so many women say that this place has given them the courage to get through each day,” she says. “It truly gives them the safety to talk freely and openly and be supported by each other.”

Nazanin says that being part of Avalon Recovery Society has not only dramatically changed her life and perspective, but also the course of her career.

“I never thought I would do addiction counselling but coming here has changed my mind. Addiction has so many faces for me now.”

After she finishes her schooling, Nazanin intends to use her skills to use a family counsellor, helping families who have been impacted by addiction to move forward towards a brighter future.

We’re so grateful to Nazanin and all our many volunteers for their incredible dedication and support of Avalon Recovery Society! We truly could not change the lives of women and families without them.
